For the last ever party at the Pelvis Space in the Phoenix Building in downtown Birmingham, Jonathan Purvis invited several artists to install work in each room of his loft. AC Temple residents Jasper, Lance, Bryan and Kathleen collaborated on an installation in one of the rooms and the result came to be known as “The Phoenix Exodus”. Because the first Psychic Doom Children coloring contest had occurred at the Pelvis Space a little more than a year previously, it seemed appropriate to incorporate another coloring event into the final party for the place.
The drawing was inspired by The Children of the Corn and was colored in during the party and added to little by little over the next few months by various people including: Burke Miles, Charles Amos Horn, Jonathan Purvis, Cheryl Rice, Kathleen Hairston, Bradley Bailey, Rodney, Jasper and others.

This year for Christmas, we had a Hack the Holodeck party on the night of December 19, which is right around the time that everyone converges back into town from their respective colleges to visit their families, and the rest of us are obliged to scatter to different cities across the country to reunite with our parents. Our party on this night occurred just before all of us at the AC Temple were set to leave town for a week or two. Johnny Rodgers of the New Jedi Order from Baltimore was in town for the event and he brought his video projector over and projected weird videos on the wall all night, including his own video work which featured psychedelic culture jamming mashups of Star Wars, Marilyn Manson, Lord of the Rings, President Bush, Furbees and vortexes of tye-dyed techno trash. The Black Christmas Coloring Party took place in the kitchen amidst mugs of hot chocolate and tapes of hissing drum machines coming out of the radio on the table. ***Noise Noel Xmas Yall***

On a sticky tour through depths of Louisiana and Texas with the Nigerian entrepreneurs Mugu Guymen, I took it upon myself to hold a coloring contest at our show at the House of Tinnitus in Denton, Texas on August 18, the day on which the Texas Chainsaw Massacre took place back in 1973, according to the narration at the beginning of the film.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Observance Day Memorial Contest was met with mostly confusion from the native Texans and enthusiasm from the other performers at the show. I began my set by announcing the contest through a megaphone, passing out the drawings to the audience and placing a bag full of crayons in the middle of the floor for them to use. My performance from then on consisted of manipulating records through a delay pedal and singing through the megaphone as people colored. The records used were Yes’ “Close to the Edge” and “Relayer“, Slim Whitman’s “Greatest Hits” and “Halloween Sounds.”

On August 3rd, I had a happy birthday to me coloring party for my birthday on hometurf at AC Temple. There was cake melting very quickly in the summer heat of the evening out on the porch. There were people I didn't know wishing me happy birthday and holding a session of an apparently long running game of chess. I was hoping someone would use the cake icing to decorate one of the drawings, but Liz gave me a visor and some donuts that i decorated my face with. Without sleep, the next day proceeded with Yard Sale Number 4 of the year, which some people certainly melted trying to get to by climbing up our steep mountain in the cheerful scorchwave of Ra. We ate more melting cake in the filtered sunlight of the living room, having abandoned the porch and called it quits early to nap thru the rest of the afternoon. Some poor souls may have knocked on the door wondering whether they could buy something, but that didn’t matter anymore. Go home and sleep. The sun is out to get us. And it’s too hot for you to buy that plastic necklace from me.

(Babylon John’s entry was made at Hugo’s birthday party. He handed the drawing to me and said that he had taken the drawing into the bathroom and jacked-off onto it. I don’t know for sure if he did indeed jack-off onto it or not. It is obvious that he also tried to make a sandwich with the drawing using lettuce, mustard, tomatoes, ketchup, mayonaise, butter, onions, salt and pepper. Whether he ended up eating this sandwich I do not know. I do know that he is a winner. He is a winner because he has done what no one else has done before. His choice of medium for this particular drawing could not have been more appropriate, regardless of whether he jacked-off onto it or not, though that is very likely. Way to go John. Very foolish indeed. The party was so weird that it didn’t even seem necessary to play any jokes on anyone. The whole thing was full of fools stumbling around in darkness, breaking windows, precariously wielding axes, yelling, putting on my clothes. I ran from room to room in a desert turban and space boots, my face smeared with pasty green soap. I shaved my face with a microphone and plunged my head in the electric bathtub as the strobe light flecks splashed upon the poise of Kool Kessler. There were so many people I didn’t recognize. Feels weird. Everyone is dispersed throughout different rooms and the front porch and back porch. I’m wandering thru the calamity trying to find someone to talk to. Is Rachel pissing into my washtub bass out back? Wait, now she’s hyper-dancing and grinding against things and people, throwing on 80’s records and crying. I am holding a special drink that Crystal made, but I can’t possibly drink it, so I just hold it. My hair is wet. There are making out noises coming from the hall. Rhea does the twist on the porch amongst the junk of the day’s yard sale. People are talking so loud! Shithawk rubadubs his poison oak skin on me as Emily plays a requiem on the cello.

The day after Valentine's Day, i made flyers out of Kyle and Duke's entries for a show the next week at the AC Temple, including a gigantic billboard sized version of the Duke's coloring entry. Theresa helped me paste xeroxes together to make the billboard mural, and we completed construction of the 8' x 11' monstrosity in a record time of 3 hours! We then drove across town at 4am to hang it on an empty billboard next to Bottletree. Lance came too, and we suffered great cold while throwing railroad spikes over the tall useless hunk of metal and trying to hoist up the mural with twine that was tied between it and the spikes. The wind was fierce and hungry and repeatedly wrapped the whole mural around the billboard post before we could hoist it up high enough to get it onto the actual billboard. We cut the cords and retreated, and the mural was saved and repaired to be hung on the front of our house on the day of the show. But, on show-day it rained and the thing fell to pieces in our front yard before nightfall. I recovered all the soggy pieces, dried them out the next day and spent the next month slowly reconstructing the whole thing to put on our kitchen ceiling. This has been the most grueling endurance test for any xerox art i've ever made....and the piece is still miraculously intact!

A Valentine's Day Coloring Contest was held at the AC Temple, somewhat in celebration of the holiday, but mostly as an excuse to have another coloring party based off of a movie as equally ridiculous as the holiday itself. "My Bloody Valentine" is a Canadian slasher movie from 1981, about a coal mining town called Valentine's Bluff where a tragic mining accident leads to a series of murders being committed by someone disguised in a coal-mining uniform and gas-mask. We watched the film during the party and feasted upon chocolates and cake provided by my Mom.

The second Psychic Doom Children Coloring Contest was held at Kyle McKinnon's 4th annual "Christmas Slasher Marathon." This is a movie marathon that Kyle holds a couple days before X-mas every year, where everyone goes over to his place to watch selections from his extensive collection of Christmas themed slasher movies. This year we watched "Santa's Slay", "Black Christmas", "Silent Night Deadly Night" (pts. 1 & 2), and "Deadly Dreams." The X-mas Slasher Coloring Contest took place in conjunction with Kyle's festive gathering and people ended up concentratedly coloring thru most of Black Christmas. The party usually lasts all night, but in the end, Kyle fell asleep early and Adam and I tucked him into bed, where he dreamed of a guy in a wolf mask standing outside his window with a shotgun. Later, some off-site coloring was done at Briz and Lyan's house by Rachel, Bryan and Rodger. Turns out the party there lasted longer than the slasher marathon, and I got a reading from “Taboo: The Mystifying Oracle” Nintendo Tarot Game, and was mystified out of mind until 7am.

The first Psychic Doom Children Coloring Contest was held on Friday the 13th of October 2006 at the closing of Jasper Lee’s "Terrae Incognitae" installation at Pelvis Space. Almost an afterthought, the coloring contest was thrown together as an entertainment for those who came to the installation closing. That day being Friday the 13th, a series of pictures to be colored were drawn from scenes in the movies "Friday the 13th" and "Friday the 13th Part 2”. The drawing of the black cat sitting by a skull was made as a general piece of "bad luck cake" with slathered on ectoplasm topping. Yellow eyes smiling in the mist of night mountain knife fountain. 777 mirrors were broken into 777,777 pieces and laid out for guests to walk on. Whoever wins the contest gets 7 years of luck. Whether it is good luck or bad luck is determined by the skull inside the cat.
The coloring party was very energenetically received by those in attendance, and three favorite entries were later chosen to be awarded special prizes. Each winner received a prize which included a Special Button and Ribbon, Halloween candy, toys, multiple xeroxes of their coloring entry, and a CD of Friday the 13th soundtrack music.
